Description:

Persons who have sustained a severe acquired brain injury (ABI) may experience social isolation and place significant burden on family members due to impairments and behaviours that prevent survivors from meeting their goals or living independently.  The ABI day program provides social and educational activities, and community outings.  We also provide community case management to clients and families, and overnight respite.

Referrals come through the Toronto ABI Network.

The program also gives support to caregivers. This includes linking caregivers to community services, education on managing behaviours, and availability of one respite bed for client overnight stays to give caregivers time to recharge.

The ABI Adult Day Program operates 5 days per week from 10:00a.m. to 2:00p.m. Each client attends 1-2 days per week for about six months. Participants bring their lunch.

Program activities support participants’ goals, enhance their strengths, and enable them to learn new skills. Groups address issues that challenge ABI clients and their families. Activities and sessions focus on recreational activities, social support, and skills training.

They may also have challenging behaviours and/or physical disabilities. West Park’s setting is barrier-free.

For two of the program’s five days each week, West Park provides wheelchair accessible transportation to and from the client’s home in the area between Highway 401, Yonge Street, Islington Avenue, and Lake Ontario. The program also welcomes clients outside these boundaries if they have their own transportation.
