Carolyn Shushelski practiced as both a nurse and a lawyer. She practiced as a registered nurse for about 10 years before obtaining her law degree from the University of Windsor. She then served as General Counsel to the Ontario Hospital Association. In that capacity, she advised many hospitals on legal and governance issues and produced successive guides on governance to assist hospital boards and managers. She also became a widely acknowledged expert on Ontario health law generally and was seconded to a major downtown law firm for two years to further develop these skills.
After leaving the OHA in 2003, Carolyn retrained so that she could practice nursing, something she did in the trauma facility at Sunnybrook. She then continued practicing law while still working shifts at Sunnybrook. She subsequently became General Counsel and Chief Privacy Officer for the Ontario Real Estate Association.
