Regional Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Service
Residential nursing care for people with
multiple sclerosis (MS)
Multiple Sclerosis is a progressive
disease of the central nervous system that strikes young adults
and can cause severe disabilities. For those with advanced MS
who need special care, West Park provides a warm, home-like
environment.
The goal of West Park Healthcare Centre's
Regional Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Service is to improve an individual's
independence and quality of life. We help our patients live
fuller, meaningful lives in an environment where quality care
and quality of life go hand in hand.

A comprehensive assessment of a patient's
health status and an opportunity to work with the health
care team to develop a personalized care plan

Opportunities for increased social interaction
through a variety of activities and recreational programs
that enhance a patient's quality of life

Access to specialty services and clinics
including chiropody, dentistry, feeding and swallowing
assessment, urology and a wheelchair seating clinic

Client and family involvement in goal
setting

Regular team reviews and on-going discharge
planning (written recommendations are shared with patient,
family and family physician)

Care is provided by a team that includes
a care co-ordinator, nurses, client care attendants and
physicians. Additionally, other staff are available as
needed, including a dietitian, occupational therapist,
physiotherapist, psychologist, social worker, speech-language
pathologist, respiratory therapists, recreation therapists
and other medical specialists
Service Options
Complex Continuing Care (26 beds)

A specialized, multi-disciplinary
health care team provides residential nursing care for people
with MS who are experiencing personal and physical challenges
such that they are completely dependent on assistance for
their care and, therefore, are unable to live in the community
Adult Physically Disabled (26 beds)

Residential care and
support for young adults with MS who are experiencing personal
and physical challenges and although unable to live independently
in the community, are able to direct their own medical and
nursing care
Eligibility
Patients of West Park's Regional Multiple
Sclerosis Service are adults (18 years of age and older) with
MS and who live in the northwestern Greater Toronto Area. Referral
by a health care professional is required.

The cost of medical and professional care
in standard ward accommodation (where four people share
one room) is covered for patients with a valid Ontario Health
Card issued by the Ministry
of Health and Long-Term Care.

The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care
requires an additional daily complex continuing care co-payment,
which is subject to change (a 30-day notice of increases
will be provided).

Additional fees are charged for semi-private
(two people per room) and private (one person per room)
accommodation. Details on co-payments and preferred accommodation
are available from West Park's Financial Services Department
