Acquired Brain Injury Behaviour Services

Assisting individuals who have experienced an acquired brain injury (ABI) to return safely to the community

Often people who have suffered a brain injury through an accident or illness develop challenging behaviours. They may, for example, become physically or verbally aggressive, or have difficulty participating in activities of daily living. At West Park, we work with clients who require behavioural rehabilitation to help them live purposeful and fulfilling lives.

West Park Healthcare Centre's Acquired Brain Injury Behaviour Service (ABIBS) is a provincial resource for patients with complex or severe behavioural dysfunction who cannot be served elsewhere in Ontario. The ABI Service is a Toronto centre in a network of regional centres of expertise in the treatment of behavioural dysfunction for people with acquired brain injury.

Community outreach services are also available to those with an ABI who currently reside in the community.

Service Features

  • The service provides in-patient rehabilitation assistance for patients with challenging behaviours and an acquired brain injury who require behavioural rehab in order to live in community settings

  • Using a blend of skill training and behavioural approaches, the ABI rehab team works with the client and his or her support network to assist those with ABI to live meaningful, active and productive lives

  • Wheelchair-accessible bachelor-style apartments located on the West Park campus featuring common kitchen and lounge areas with features to ensure safety for clients and staff

  • Our in-patient team of health care professionals includes behaviour therapists, nurses, a physician, behaviour analyst, rehabilitation therapists, a social worker, psychologist and consulting occupational therapists and physiotherapists

Eligibility

  • Clients of West Park's ABIBS are adults (18 to 65 years of age) with an acquired brain injury as the result of a trauma or a disease process that has resulted in challenging behaviours.

  • Clients should:
    o be medically stable
o be under the care of a physician
o not require immediate hospitalization for medical or psychiatric reasons
o not be facing criminal charges
