Infection rates:
Each infection rate is calculated as a rate per 1,000 patient days.
The “total patient days” represents the sum of the number of days during which services were provided to all inpatients during the given time period.

The rate is calculated as follows:

# of new hospital acquired cases (C. difficile, VRE or MRSA) in our facility x 1000
Total number of patient days (for one month)

Case count
If there are less than 5 C. difficile, VRE or MRSA cases, the Ministry of Health and Long-term Care has requested we do not indicate the exact number of cases in order to best preserve patient confidentiality.

Outbreak reporting
The potential for a ward/unit level outbreak will be reported to public health when
West Park has 3 or more cases with onsets within a ward/unit within a week. A ward/unit level outbreak will be declared when West Park has 6 or more cases with onsets within a ward/unit within a month. However, if these thresholds have not been reached but West Park believes that number of cases is higher than the baseline rates for that unit, the Centre will contact our local public health unit to determine whether this requires further investigation. If an outbreak is confirmed, it will be shared with the public on West Park's website.
