Syd Collier Loss of limb due to motorcycle accident

Syd Collier :
Entrepreneur, foundation donor and volunteer

Syd lost his leg in a serious motorcycle accident. When he came to West Park, Syd was fitted with a prosthesis and, after therapy as a patient of our Amputee Rehabilitation Service, was back running his business, riding his bike and living life to the fullest again. He now supports West Park through an annual gift and has helped the foundation’s campaign efforts as a volunteer.

Open Board Meetings

West Park Healthcare Centre has committed itself for a number of years to Open Board meetings as a reflection of its desire to be an organization that promotes the involvement and participation of its stakeholders, including members of the public.

Purpose of Open Board meetings

  • To inform the public directly about hospital policies and priorities

  • To forge closer links with the public, media and key stakeholder groups

  • To receive communication directly from the community

  • To identify the needs of the community in a more timely, direct fashion

  • To promote the hospital's programs and services

  • To generate an environment of trust, involvement and membership within the community

Who may attend Open Board meetings?

Anyone may attend a meeting. For example, patients/residents and their families, members of the West Park Healthcare Centre Corporation, the press, groups, associations and volunteers are welcome. Priority access is given to primary stakeholders: patients, residents and their families and community groups, when space is at a premium.

West Park Healthcare Centre staff have access to the board on governance issues through such structures as the Medical Advisory and Fiscal Advisory committees, which the community cannot access.

Notification of meetings

Meeting dates are posted on this web site and meeting announcements are posted within the hospital at least one week prior to the board meeting.

Agenda and attachments

An agenda will be made available at the board meeting for members of the public in attendance. If requested, the Director, Public Relations will provide an agenda in advance of a board meeting for members of the public.

Guidelines for participation by the public

Translation Services
For those members of the public who do not understand English, the hospital will endeavour to provide the necessary facilitator/translation service. This will require 48 hours notice prior to a board meeting and will be subject to available resources.

Questions from the public
Will be addressed at the end of each meeting, or at the discretion of the Chair, for 15 minutes. The Chair may direct questions to be answered by members of Senior Management at his/her discretion.

Presentations from the public
Individuals or delegations wishing to make a presentation to the board must submit a verbal or written request to the Director, Public Relations at least 48 hours prior to the meeting. The Director, Public Relations will direct these requests to a Board subcommittee, where appropriate.

During a Board meeting, time allocated for all presentations by members of the public will normally be limited to 10 minutes. Length of discussion following such presentation will be at the discretion of the Chair. Board meetings are to be used as forums for presentation of new information, or an alternative perspective concerning a particular topic or issue.

In the event that a delegation wishes to make an unannounced presentation, it will be at the discretion of the Chair whether to allow the presentation.

Use of cameras and other recording devices by members of the public
With the exception of any recording done by the hospital, any and all forms of video, audio and audio-visual recording equipment and storage devices will be prohibited from any meeting of the board.
